Faces of the Rose Parade

January 1st 2009 was not only the first day of the year but it was also the first day I shot with
Canon 5DII.  In a nut-shell, it has the best Canon sensor so far in a DSLR.  In terms of resolution, it could not match the Nikon D3X and the Sony A900.  The auto-focus, while improved, is still not in the league as the EOS 1 series nor the Nikon D3.  It does, however, has HD movie mode, which makes it an unique camera at this point in time.

The improvement I appreciate the most is in the expanded dynamic range and the dedicated AF-on button.  At 3.9 frames per second, it is not particularly fast however.  Well, we can always hope for the 1 series Mark IV to appear.  In the mean-time, let's go out and capture some images....

Low Rider

I did not have a chance to test the high ISO capability of the 5DII as we had a nice sunny day for the Rose Parade.  I will start with some spectators at the Parade.

From Low to High

It reminded me of the circus somehow...

like the color rendering, very nostalgic. :victory:

TonyShum 發表於 2009-1-7 08:22

Thank you, Yuhong.  I am trying to use a sepia tone for this series ( the nostalgic look ), as the color version is all too common.  It is mostly an experimentation and I am interested in the response of the viewers as part of the learning process.:)

Love the concepts of this group, and of course, the COLOR would be THE outstanding part of it.

Thank you, Dr. Chen.  In fact, this is one of the exciting aspects of the movie mode of the 5DII, with reduced DOF by using fast lenses.

Emotional balloons

With clowns, one would be thinking about balloons.  In this image,  I want to depict the emotion ( laughter ) rather than the colorful balloons.  The balloons, however, provide the background and reference for the occasion.

Lively and fascinating shot!:victory: :victory:

I suppose these balloons should be the telling details, but without photographer's self-explanation it's hard for me to figure out the reference for the occasion.:$

Thank you, Christine.

The reference I am referring to is a general statement.  The Rose Parade is a festive event and balloons are parts of that festivity.

TonyShum 發表於 2009-1-9 08:20

Fascination

Dr. Hu ( Cloud-walker ) has pointed out that photo-opportunities occur prior to the parade.  Once the parade starts, there is only one view-point ( usually one cannot move around ) and any images captured are just mere recordings.

Well, back to balloons.  We can pretty much expect to see children fascinated by the sight of them....

TonyShum 發表於 2009-1-10 08:17

Flawed Fascination

Indeed, instead of providing safety with this balloon helmet, it may actually affect the hearing of the child when the balloons pop at such a close distance to the ears.  This coming from an ENT ( Ear, Nose and Throat ) specialist:)

I will resume posting next week after I return from an out-of-town conference.
