Paradise

Master Ray Wei has classified photography into three levels:  descriptive, interpretive and expressive.  The last is the highest level and enables the photographer to share his feeling with the viewers.  This is easier said than done.  All of us photographers are searching for that formula to express our feeling, but it does not exist in reality.  In the digital age, we can share our images quickly through these forum and get a feed-back, thus helping us to improve ourselves as photographers faster than in the last Century.  Trying something new may not work but at least one will find out rapidly through the viewers' responses.

I started out with the choice of a flower, in this case the ' Bird of Paradise '.  Why?  Simply because it is readily available, is colorful, and I can create a beautiful title from it ( thus the title ' Paradise ' ).  Instead of a descriptive or interpretive rendition, these images are all macro shots that are slightly off focus.  So what's the point, you may ask?  Hopefully, this is the beginning of a journey of creativity.:)

Thank you, Lulu.  The pastel color composition is indeed my intention in this post.  Let's see it at a different angle.:)

Color Theory

The last picture was chosen not for its' design, but for the fact that it shows red, yellow and blue in the same flower, the three traditional primary colors in Art design.  (  Since the 19th Century, the more scientific primary colors had been red, green and blue, so called RGB ).

The first picture, on the other hand, has a major flaw; It contains four main colors.  In an abstract composition, one tries to strive for three colors or less.  So what can one do about this picture?    One can do some cropping or hide some of the colors.

Combining the two thoughts, I proceed to create a picture with the three traditional primary colors, using the first picture as a background so I can hide some colors with the new foreground.  Remember I mentioned creativity:) .

Autumn in Paradise

Dr. Chen has posted pictures of Lulu in a post called ' Autumn in Winter '.  I will borrow one of his images and create another image called ' Autumn ( Lulu ) in Paradise ', using the first image of the bird of paradise as the background.  I will use Lulu's red dress to go with the yellow and blue background.  A Monte Zucker style soft focus effect is used for the image.  The background is adjusted using ' overlay ' blending option in Photoshop.  I would like to thank Dr. Chen and Lulu for allowing me to use the image.

Thank you, Christine.

Color harmony is an important concept in photography, especially so in abstract design.  Here we have the secondary color scheme of green, orange and violet.  Diagonal line is used to add energy.

Beyond Paradise

Using the same color harmony scheme, we can extend to flowers other than ' bird of paradise ' and continue with our journey of exploration.

Light & Shadow

Here using a pen-light for illumination and adding a water-color edge to add a different element to the composition.

Primary and Secondary Colors

Thank you Dr. Chen and Moses.

Here, we have the subject in primary color ( blue ) and the background in secondary colors ( green, orange and violet ), combining ideas from the previous pictures.

Background-- Color or no Color?

Thank you, Yuhong.

Yuhong has an keen eye on the background.  Indeed, sometimes, one might find the green color of the background, even though nice, may be somewhat distracting.  By draining the background color away, one can focus more on the subject itself.

Complementary Color

Another important concept is the use of complementary color ( yellow and blue, magenta and green etc.) in the design of the image.  Here is an example of such.
